Cal Hacks is the world's largest collegiate hackathon, a 3-day event where hackers creatively collaborate on innovative technology for a chance to win prizes including cash. The event features workshops, panels, and tech talks to help participants learn more about emerging tech.
Who Can Participate Cal Hacks is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as new graduates of under 1 year from all colleges and universities (those who graduated prior to Fall 2025 do not qualify). All experience levels are welcome, whether you have barely ever coded or have participated in twenty hackathons. The event aims to create an environment where hackers of marginalized backgrounds can thrive.
Team & Project Rules - Up to 4 people can be part of a single team. - Every team member must be a first-time hacker. Attending a prior hackathon and not submitting a project or demoing still counts as having prior experience. - You cannot work on a project started before the hackathon; ideation is allowed, but all implementation must occur during the event. - Participants can join with a team or come solo. Socials and team matching events are hosted to help attendees connect.
Logistics & Venue The hackathon takes place at the Palace of Fine Arts. Attendance requires being in-person for the duration of the event. Meals, snacks, and sleeping rooms are provided on-site. Hardware is available to borrow, and travel stipends are offered to a limited number of hackers based on regional caps. Reliable public transportation options include CalTrain, BART, and buses, with a free hacker bus also planned from the BART line.
