Devil’s Advocate is an event that tests the debating and critical reasoning capabilities of participants. This is an individual participation event wherein the participants would be randomly assigned a topic and they have to debate on it, except there is a twist, the participants would have to switch their stance after a pre-specified duration of time. Clear logical reasoning is a key requirement for decision-making. This event would test whether the participants can clearly prove a point in a debate while acknowledging that valid counter-arguments exist. The event will have two rounds. In the first round, the participants would have to submit either a short essay or a recorded video on any one topic from the given list, while arguing from both sides of the problem statement. Those from the first round that qualify for the second round would participate in the national finals, where they will have to debate in front of the judges. Topics: Are strong leaders more valuable than strong institutions? Should humanitarian intervention override national sovereignty? Does talent outweigh hard work? The participants can do either one of the following as part of their submission for the first round: Write an essay of not more than 300 words covering both sides of the topic. Record a video of 1.5 minutes speaking on both sides of the topic. Use of AI is allowed, but the prompt is also to be submitted if AI has been used. Guidelines: 12 participants will be advancing to round 2 which will be held online. The final round will take place in offline mode at IIM Bangalore campus. Individual participation only. General Rules: Each individual must register only once. If multiple registrations are done, the individual will be disqualified. The participants must carefully read through and agree to the following Terms & Conditions before registering: All decisions in matters of eligibility, authenticity, and final judgments will be with the organizing committee of Devil's Advocate, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. The organizing committee holds the discretion to change the format and structure of the event at any point.
