Postcards From Us: Some places live on maps. Others live in memory. In celebration of South Asian Heritage Month, Her Campus at MUJ presents Postcards From Us — a national-level online creative competition inviting students from across India to turn the colours, chaos, textures, traditions, stories, and little details of home into art. Centred around the theme of Desi Maximalism, it is a love letter to the beautifully too much of it all — to the places we come from, the cultures we carry, and the everyday details that make them unmistakably ours. Theme: Desi Maximalism — More is More, and More is Home: Think crowded bazaars and overflowing jewellery boxes. Marigold garlands against peeling walls. Henna-stained hands, embroidered dupattas, hand-painted trucks, newspaper-wrapped parcels, steel chai glasses, old family photographs, matchboxes, bindis, bangles, Bollywood posters, mithai boxes saved because they were simply too pretty to throw away. Think colour upon colour. Pattern upon pattern. Memory upon memory. Postcards From Us asks you to capture the India that exists beyond monuments and postcards — the India tucked into ordinary lives. The India of your grandmother's cupboards and neighbourhood kirana stores. Of wedding envelopes nobody throws away. Of local markets, auto-rickshaw rides, handwritten signs, roadside chai, festival lights, family albums, embroidered fabrics, loud prints, louder families, and homes where somehow every object has a story. Your interpretation of Desi Maximalism can be nostalgic, contemporary, eccentric, glamorous, chaotic, sentimental, satirical, or wonderfully over-the-top. There is no single way to be desi — and there certainly isn't a minimalist one. So show us yours. What's in It for You?: Because a postcard deserves somewhere to go — and good art deserves to be celebrated. The Top 5 entries will receive special prizes and goodies from our gifting partner, Aphrodite's Market. Specific prizes will be revealed separately. All participants will receive Certificates of Participation or Excellence because every interpretation adds another colour, texture, and story to the world we're building together. Judging Criteria: Submissions will be evaluated on: Creativity & Originality Interpretation of Desi Maximalism Storytelling / Conceptual Depth Execution & Technical Skill Aesthetic Impact Cultural Resonance Judging will be conducted by Her Campus at MUJ's Executive Committee. All decisions made by the judging panel will be final and confidential. Rules & Guidelines: The competition is open to school and college students across India. Participants may submit multiple entries; however, only one entry per category is permitted. All submissions must be original work created by the participant. Plagiarised or AI-generated content will result in immediate disqualification. Entries must meaningfully interpret the central theme of Desi Maximalism. Interpretations may be personal, cultural, regional, contemporary, nostalgic, humorous, fictional, or experimental. We strongly encourage participants to explore their own relationship with Indian culture and everyday life rather than relying solely on stereotypical representations. Submissions may be in English or Hindi. Only individual submissions are permitted. Group entries will not be accepted. Content must be non-offensive, inclusive, and respectful of India's diverse cultures, communities, traditions, and lived experiences. Any submission violating the competition guidelines may be disqualified without prior notice. Format-Specific Guidelines: Artwork: Artwork must be original and created entirely by the participant. AI-generated or traced artwork is strictly prohibited. Both digital artwork and scanned traditional artwork are permitted. Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, or PDF. Good image quality is required; 1080 × 1080 resolution or higher is preferred. Every artwork must have a title. Participants may optionally include a short description of up to 100 words explaining the concept, cultural references, or story behind their work.
